Opened to wide critical acclaim, The Temperamentals is the highly entertaining and real-life story of Harry Hay, a straight-laced teacher turned activist, Rudi Gernreich, a Viennese-born MGM costume designer (played by Michael Urie of 'Ugly Betty'), and the group that went on to found the first gay rights organization, the Mattachine Society, years before the Stonewall riots. It's a powerful story packed with loads of laughs, intelligence, politics, and wit, with provocative glimpses into the deeply closeted world of the '50s - where people went through extraordinary lengths to disguise their identities - and where the wrong word, or even the right word said the wrong way, could end a career, destroy friendships, or worse. The show incorporates brilliant cameos depicting colorful characters like Vincent Minelli, (married to Judy Garland), and was written by Jon Marans (a 1996 Pulitzer finalist), and is directed by Jonathan Silverstein.
