After its great success on Broadway, Hedwig & The Angry Inch is on a national tour which started this month. Darren Criss, alongside Tony-award winner Lena Hall, launched the highly anticipated tour at SHN Golden Gate Theatre in San Francisco. The tour will then transfer on to the Hollywood Pantages Theatre in Los Angeles, before moving on to various other locations – Denver, Seattle, Dallas, Detroit, Washington DC – you name it!
While the tour is exciting enough, there is another groundbreaking twist – Lena Hall will also play the role of Hedwig for one performance a week in San Francisco and Los Angeles! Not only is it a rare occurrence for a Tony Award winner to go on a national tour, but Hedwig & The Angry Inch is also making history. Book writer John Cameron Mitchell said, “Oh my Goddess, Lena Hall is the only talent I know who could play a brilliant Yitzhak and Hedwig in the same production. Talk about finding your other half. It’s Hedwig history in the making.”
Darren and Lena are no strangers to Hedwig & The Angry Inch as they both have played parts in the original Broadway production. As natives of San Francisco, where the tour has kicked off, they are extremely thrilled to bring the amazing show to their hometown. Composer and lyricist Stephen Trask is equally as excited, on the casting of Darren he said, “People as talented as Darren don’t come along all that often, so that alone is cause for excitement about his ‘Hedwig.’ What’s really cool to me is that because Darren played her on Broadway, we can launch the tour with continuity and authenticity, but at the same time we can make the show his and take advantage of how truly amazing he is.”
Not only does the tour have an outstanding cast, but also a wonderful creative team. The tour is directed by Tony Award-winner Michael Mayer, features Emmy Award nominee Spencer Liff for musical staging, Tony Award nominee and Drama Desk winner Julian Crouch for scenic design, Tony Award and tow time Oscar nominee Arianne Phillips for costume design, four-time Tony Award-winner Kevin Adams for lighting design, Mike Potter for hair and make-up design, Tony Award nominee and platinum selling record producer Tim O’Heir for sound design, Bejamin Pearcy for 59 Productions for projection design, John Blair for animation, Tony and Grammy Award nominee Ethan Popp for music supervisor and coordination, Justin Craig as musical director, and Johanna McKeon as associate director.
